In 1982 the work of the Famous “SHANTA BHAWAN HOSPITAL”, a converted royal palace, shifted across town into a new building and the hospital change its name as “PATAN HOSPITAL”. The Nepal words “SHANT BHAWAN” means “HOUSE OF PEACE” when translated into English. The house, or palace, was for many years a hospital run by a Christian mission, the united mission of Nepal(UMN).its history began in 1956 when a group of missionaries moved into and old palace in kathmandu and set up a hospital. In the early days of a new regime the UMN was invited to set up hospital in tansen, a town in the west of the country, and in Kathmandu, capital of Nepal. So, began the history of shanta bhawan for 25 years, compassion and medical care were given to all in need, regardless of their ability to pay. The work out grew the palace and plans were made to built a new hospital. The building work raced ahead and on November 9th 1982 (23rd Kartik, 2039, according to the Nepal Nepal calendar), a hospital was born in a different location and with a new vision and a new named as “PATAN HOSPITAL”.

There were many expressions of regret and great sentimentality as the move was made. It was only transfer from an old building to a new, it was with a new role, a new vision that this hospital began. But what of the old? The land and building were divided up and sold off in separate lots. The large building was turned into a school. Other areas which had held staff housing were bought by different organizations; one area was turned into a church, another into a factory. Goodbyes were said with both nostalgia and relief. Maintaining that old palace had been a nightmare. Administering a hospital in it had required constant ingenuity. Patients had been carried up and down the stairs by 4 men; staff had spent all their time running round courtyards. We can say “SHANTA BHAWAN” was farewell and “PATAN HOSPITAL” welcomed.

Patan hospital is sometimes known as “the new shanta Bhawan”. The reputation of the old shanta Bhawan follows for better or for worse. Some people compare the new with the old and fine the new lacking, but many find this new shanta Bhawan is still “A house of peace”.

Patan hospital is a 300 plus bed district general hospital located in lagankhel to the south of Kathmandu. Its staff of nearly 600 includes a small number of expatriate missionaries seconded to the hospital by UMN. The hospital’s clinical departments are:
Medicine, Intensive care Unit, Obstetrics and Gynecology [includes a low cost Birthing Centre] Surgery, Orthopedics Surgery, Pediatrics, Outpatients/Emergency, Dermatology and dental. It lacks highly specialized departments (e.g. / cardiology, neurology, etc.) and patients I need of such services are referred to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (T.U.T.H.)

Its mission is to serve with skill and compassion all that came to the hospital, a special place for the poor and a spirit that makes extraordinary things happen.
